7 Visual Merchandising Rules That Increase Store Sales
Where should your best sellers sit? Which way do customers turn? Seven proven visual merchandising rules from the ProSite VM team, with a wall elevation and a customer-path plan.
Two stores can sell the same product at the same price and get very different results. The difference is often visual merchandising (VM): how the store guides the customer, what they see first, and what sits within reach when they are ready to buy.
Table Of Content
Our VM team and trainer, with more than 16 years in retail, apply these seven rules in every store we open or refresh.

1. Keep the entrance clear
The first 2 to 3 metres inside the door are the decompression zone. Shoppers are adjusting to the light, the space and the music, and they rarely stop here. Keep it open and inviting; do not put your key offer where people walk straight past it.
2. Build a power wall where customers turn
Most shoppers naturally turn right after they enter. The first wall they face is your power wall: use it for new arrivals, the season’s story or your strongest category.
3. One focal table, one story
Every table in the customer’s path should tell a single, clear story: one colour family, one look, one promotion. Mixed tables look like clearance; focused tables look like a recommendation.
4. Pull customers deeper with the back wall
A strong feature on the back wall, with graphics, lighting and a hero product, gives shoppers a reason to walk to the end of the store, passing more product on the way.
5. Group by category and colour
Group products by category first, then by colour, flowing from light to dark. It makes the wall easy to read and makes sizes and alternatives easy to find.

6. Use the four selling zones on every wall
Not every shelf sells the same. On a typical wall bay:
- Visual zone (180 to 220 cm): brand image, graphics and lifestyle
- Eye level (120 to 180 cm): your best sellers, new arrivals and face-outs. This is the most valuable space in the store
- Reach zone (60 to 120 cm): the core range and folded stacks
- Stock zone (0 to 60 cm): back-up sizes and bulky items
Put your hero product at eye level, never your back-up stock.
7. Finish the journey at the cash wrap
Place the cash wrap at the end of the natural path, keep it tidy, and use it for small add-on items. Make fitting rooms easy to find and well lit, because a customer who tries something on is far more likely to buy it.
